Description
LNER marked the withdrawal of its HSTs with a four-day farewell tour just before Christmas using a set repainted into former British Rail colours

Day one: the first two days of the tour covered routes in Scotland. On 18 December the set worked from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and thence to Inverness, the latter section not normally traversed by LNER’s HSTs but now the domain of ScotRail’s short Inter7City sets.

Day two: the return from Inverness to Edinburgh on 19 December was via the Highland main line; this view was captured south of Tomatin. As well as being repainted into the original livery the two power cars wore their original British Rail class numbers: No 43206 became No 253003, reflecting its former life on the Western Region, and No 43312 was numbered 254029.

Day three: 20 December saw the tour proceed south from Edinburgh to Leeds via Newcastle and York; this shot was taken at Burnmouth just before the train crossed the border from into England. The power cars were repainted by Heritage Painting at Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh and the seven Mk 3 coaches by Wabtec at Doncaster.

Day four: the tour culminated in a Leeds to King’s Cross to journey on 21 December, with extended stops en-route for photography and to allow service trains to overtake. Here it passes Hougham in Lincolnshire, between Newark and Grantham.

The set was used for a circular tour for staff at the depot on 28 December prior to moving south for storage at Ely on New Year’s Eve.
