LMS Black Five 45212 + 47812 on the ROYAL DUCHY at Taunton, before failing with HOT BOX at Plymouth!
The locomotive was covering for LNER A1 60163 'Tornado' which was previously earmarked to haul this trip as it did back in May https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbfDUcuS85k but 45212 was sent to cover while the A1 remained at the Nene Valley ahead of next weekends Greatest Gathering in Derby.
45212 had already had an eventful few days last week as it suffered a hot axel box whilst working the Railway Touring Company ‘Dorset Coast Express’ from London Victoria to Weymouth last week and was removed from the train at Weymouth to enable repairs to the bearing on the rear axle of its tender.
Following repairs the locomotive along with its support coach worked from Weymouth Jubilee Sidings to Bristol St Philips Marsh HST Depot yesterday in preparation to haul todays tour from Bristol Temple Meads.
However on route the locomotive suffered more issues at Maiden Newton falling behind schedule and stopping in the sidings at Yeovil Pen Mill where the persisting hot box had reoccurred on its journey from Weymouth.
Following remedial work, the locomotive appeared on todays tour, and during this short stop at Taunton the crew were extremely vigilant, monitoring the locomotive for any issues to ensure the persisting issue was rectified, but sadly by the time it reached Plymouth, the engine had once again suffered another hot axel box and was removed where at the time of upload, 45212 has gone to in Laira depot, while 47812 continued the journey to Par and returned the tour to Bristol. | 27.07.2025
