Class 31 31468 + 31602 | Salisbury Brighton Return Rail Journey | 18th July 2003
On the journey to Brighton, the class 31/6 catches up with slow stopping trains between Southampton to Fareham, and between Barnham to Worthing with a few red lights to stop for. On the return from Brighton, the class 31/4 catches up with slow stopping trains between Worthing and Arundel Junction, and on the outskirts of Havant. After this the journey is much faster to make up lost time, especially between Fareham and Southampton where there’s some heavy braking and accelerations negotiating the numerous speed restrictions on the curves in this section.
This class 31 loco hauled service only ran on Fridays, with a class 158 unit used for the Monday to Thursday services. It's filmed mostly over electrified lines, this being one of a few diesel workings over this section (and I believe the only loco hauled service) and I thought that I would share this past railway footage.
