Description
A couple of days up North today began with a trip to The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, whose Diesel Gala was well underway today boasting a grand and diverse line up of guest diesel locomotives, hauling passenger and freight trains along the stretch between Keighley and Oxenhope across the four days!

This was the first time I had gone back here for many years, so great to get back and ride the line, and Day 2 of the Gala saw 31210, 31108, 37218 'Carbon Redeemer', 37250, 47715, 55009 'Alycidon', 50049 'Defiance' and the resident shunters all in action working a comprehensive timetable along the West Yorkshire railway.

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is famous for its association with the classic film The Railway Children. Much of the 1970 adaptation of The Railway Children was filmed along this railway, particularly at Oakworth Station, which became one of the most recognisable railway stations in British cinema.

The railway was chosen because it retained an authentic Edwardian appearance and was one of the few preserved railways at the time with a tunnel, an important feature for several key scenes in the film. Famous sequences, including the children's train waving rescue and scenes around the tunnel near Haworth were filmed on the line.

The railway's connection with the story remains strong today. It was also used for the 2022 sequel, The Railway Children Return, with filming taking place at stations including Keighley, Oakworth, Damems and Oxenhope.

Enjoy all the highlights from a day spent riding the trains, as the diesels ruled the railway. It was especially nice to catch 31210 back from a comprehensive overhaul, as well as 37218 given the recent announcement about the EPR arm of Europhoenix ceasing trading. | 19.06.2026
