'THE CHRISTMAS WHITE ROSE' with 44871 & 47848 + exploring the NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM! | 18.12.2024
The tour originated at Cambridge North forming the 1Z20, and we join at Peterborough for a cracking run up the East Coast Mainline, with a water stop at Ruskington, before passing through Lincoln, and heading up through Doncaster, arriving into York shortly after 12.30. We see the Black Five head off with the ECS and WCRC 47848 on the rear to Holgate sidings before taking a look around the National Railway Museum.
The NRM is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, so some areas like the Station Hall where the royal carriages are housed were off limits, but the Great Hall and was packed with grand locomotives telling the story of railway history and the Warehouse was a treasure trove of railwayana, easily somewhere you could lose yourself all day!
After a good look around for a couple of hours there was just enough time to have a wonder into York, through the shambles with a visit to the Christmas Markets and the fantastic Monk Bar Model Shop, before heading back to the Station.
Before the return leg of our tour arrived, there was another West Coast Railway Company excursion in the area, as 57314 'Conwy Castle' and 57313 'Scarborough Castle' arrived with the 1Z55 ‘Northern Belle’ Derby - York. After a short stop this luxury charter headed back out forming the 1Z56 York - Sheffield, leaving the road clear for 47848 to shunt the stock back into York ready for our return run.
The Black Five was removed for this section of the tour, so the 47 powered us back through the darkness to Peterborough, where we see it leaving in the rain, before 44871 rounds off a brilliant day passing light engine on the 5Z21 York North Yard - Southall WCRC, ready for more Polar Express commitments in the run up to Christmas.
