Description
A peaceful afternoon session spent at Wellingborough on the Midland Mainline where we see services from East Midlands Railway and freight from GBRF.

Been a long old time since I was last at Wellingborough and the station has changed a lot in 11 years, it was 2015 since I last came here.

The station was opened in 1857 by the Midland Railway when the line was extended from Leicester to Bedford and Hitchin. This station was first called Wellingborough Midland Road as the London & Northwestern Railway were also building a station on their line from Northampton.

Wellingborough station had a large locomotive depot and two roundhouses to deal with the large volume of traffic coming from the various lines that served the town. Sadly none of the buildings survived apart from the No.2 Shed that can be found to the north of the station.

Like many stations this one has seen tragedy as in 1898 when a trolley ran off the end of the platform and rolled onto the tracks, right in the path of a passing express train running up to Manchester, the accident resulted in the deaths of the crew and five passengers, 65 others were injured.

The original station had 5 platforms, 1 + 2 still exist, P3 was the bay platform for the Northampton trains. The bay is still there but its been fenced off. In 1964 P4 was renumbered to P3 and P5 was taken out of use when the services from Rushden and Higham Ferrers were ceased in 1959.

My next station will be Bedford.
