Guest Steam Locomotives Leave the SVR! | Kerr Stuart 4388 & Hollybank No.3 on Low Loaders |
Built in 1926 by Kerr, Stuart & Company, No. 4388 is one of the most distinctive industrial locomotives in preservation. Its unusual appearance, featuring outside cylinders, no front footplate and a notably small saddle tank, made it one of the standout guest engines at this year’s gala. Our thanks go to Jack Dibnah, the Foxfield Railway, and Footplate of Kidderminster for making its visit possible and sponsoring the road haulage.
Also featured is Hunslet Works No. 3783, built in 1953 for the National Coal Board as Darfield No. 1. After a long industrial career at Darfield Main Colliery, the locomotive entered preservation in 1975 and has since operated at several heritage railways, including the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway, Llangollen Railway, Dartmoor Railway and Chasewater Railway. Since 2012 it has carried the identity Hollybank No. 3, recreating the identity of an earlier Hunslet locomotive that worked in the South Staffordshire coalfield.
Sadly, due to a fault discovered before the event, Hollybank No. 3 was unable to haul trains during the gala and instead appeared as a static exhibit at Kidderminster Town. Despite this disappointment, it was still a popular attraction with visitors throughout the event.
This video captures the end of their visit as both locomotives leave the Severn Valley Railway by road, bringing the curtain down on another memorable Summer Steam Gala.
