Description
Railway Route Learning – Sandhills Platform 1 to Kirkdale Depot (Merseyrail)

Hello and welcome to Trains Trains Trains.

Today we're carrying out Railway Route Learning on the Merseyrail Northern Line, travelling from Sandhills Platform 1 to Kirkdale Depot, one of the most important depot access moves on the Merseyrail network.

Sandhills is the first station north of Liverpool city centre where the Northern Line divides towards Southport, Ormskirk and Headbolt Lane via Kirkby, making it a key operational junction on the network.

As always, this video is intended for railway enthusiasts and route familiarisation only. It is not an official route learning resource for operational railway staff.

Leaving Sandhills Platform 1, we accelerate away on the Up Northern Line. The line is straight with excellent forward visibility, allowing a clear view of the railway ahead.

Immediately after departing the platform, look out for the complex layout of points and crossovers around Sandhills Junction. These connections provide operational flexibility, allowing trains to move between the various Northern Line routes and depot access lines when required.

The route is fully electrified using Merseyrail's 750-volt DC third rail system, so throughout this journey you'll notice conductor rails, insulated gaps and the associated electrical infrastructure alongside the running lines.

As we continue north, the railway remains on a gentle alignment through the Kirkdale area. Driver awareness here focuses on signal aspects, permissible speeds and any conflicting movements approaching the depot junction.

Ahead, the entrance to Kirkdale Depot comes into view on the left-hand side.

This depot is the principal maintenance and stabling facility for the Merseyrail fleet. It is where trains are serviced, inspected, cleaned and prepared for daily operation across the Northern and Wirral networks.

The turnout into the depot is approached at reduced speed. Careful observation of the route indicator and signal aspect is essential to ensure the correct route has been set.

Once the points are negotiated, the train leaves the running line and enters depot territory.

Within the depot, movements are carried out at low speed under depot operating rules. Numerous sidings spread out in front of us, with maintenance buildings, inspection roads, washing facilities and train stabling roads visible throughout the site.

You'll often see multiple Class 777 units undergoing servicing or awaiting their next diagram, making Kirkdale one of the busiest railway locations on the Merseyrail network.

As we continue deeper into the depot, be aware of the numerous pointwork layouts, buffer stops and engineering infrastructure that allow trains to be routed efficiently between maintenance roads and stabling sidings.

That completes today's Railway Route Learning journey from Sandhills Platform 1 to Kirkdale Depot.

I hope you've enjoyed this look at one of Merseyrail's most important operational routes.
