Description
British Rail Class 69 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives represent a heavy rebuilding programme undertaken for GB Railfreight (GBRf) by Progress Rail / Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD). Rebuilt from former Class 56 bodyshells—which were originally powered by a 16-cylinder Ruston-Paxman 16RK3CT diesel engine producing 3,250 brake horsepower (2,423 kW) with a starting tractive effort of 61,800 lbf—these heavily modernized locomotives feature an American-built 12-cylinder EMD 12-710G3B-EC two-stroke diesel engine producing 3,200 brake horsepower (2,386 kW) with a starting tractive effort of 62,900 lbf. Rebuilt from donor locomotive 56069, locomotive 69004 is turned out in a retro British Rail Research Department red and blue livery with crisp white lining, celebrating GBRf's support operations at the Rail Innovation and Development Centre (RIDC) at Melton Mowbray.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen on the evening of Tuesday 21/07/2026 at 20:23, GBRf Class 69 number 69004 looks absolutely fantastic in its stunning British Rail Research Department red and blue livery, giving the re-engineered freight locomotive a wonderfully authentic retro feel. Hauling an empty silica sand working from Monk Bretton Redfearns GBRf to March Up Yard GBRf, the locomotive is captured powering down the main line as it passes through Knottingley South Junction, heading south towards Doncaster, while passing a waiting GBRf Drax-bound service held on the opposite line heading north.
