Top-and-Tail Class 47 Thrash! Class 47 Number 47813 Leads 47812 on The Waverley Railtour Return

British Rail Class 47 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives were designed and built by Brush Traction in Loughborough between 1962 and 1968. Long serving as the versatile backbone of Britain's passenger and heavy freight networks, these iconic locomotives are powered by a 12-cylinder Sulzer 12LDA28-C twin-bank turbocharged diesel engine producing 2,580 brake horsepower (1,920 kW) with a starting tractive effort of 60,000 lbf. In a top-and-tail formation, locomotive 47813 leads the service with 47812 on the tail end, both operated by West Coast Railways (WCR) and turned out in classic WCR maroon livery with full yellow warning panels.

Working the return leg of "The Waverley" railtour (promoted by The Railway Touring Company and operated under headcode 1Z41) from Carlisle to York, the train pulls into Castleford station before thunderously pulling away, opening up its roaring Sulzer engines and leaving a dense trail of diesel fumes in its wake as it accelerates out of the station.
