'The Dalesman' Night Departure! Class 47 Numbers 47812 & 47813 Top-and-Tail Thrashing Into The Night

British Rail Class 47 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives 47812 and 47813 were constructed by Brush Traction at Falcon Works in Loughborough, entering service in September 1964 (originally D1762) and October 1964 (originally D1763) respectively. Powered by a Sulzer 12LDA28-C 12-cylinder twin-bank turbocharged diesel engine, each locomotive produces a power output of 2,750 brake horsepower (2,050 kW) with a starting tractive effort of 62,000 lbf (276 kN) and a maximum speed of 95 mph. Weighing approximately 122 tonnes, both units were converted into the 47/8 sub-class during the late 1980s by receiving long-range fuel tanks and Electric Train Heating (ETH/ETS) equipment for long-distance passenger charters. Both locomotives are turned out in pristine West Coast Railways (WCR) maroon livery with full yellow warning ends, twin buffer headstocks, and classic dual-cab construction.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a late summer's night on Tuesday 21/07/2026 at 22:07, Class 47 47812 leads in top-and-tail formation with 47813 on the rear operating West Coast Railways' 'The Dalesman' railtour on its return leg from York to Carnforth Steamtown. After receiving a green signal, pristine 47812 thrashes loudly out of Church Fenton station directly behind a preceding train, creating a dramatic night scene as it rumbles away, sending thick plumes of diesel exhaust into the night air while 47813 idles loudly at the rear as the train heads back towards the depot at Carnforth.
