Description
British Rail Class 66/6 Co-Co diesel-electric locomotive 66623 'Lest We Forget' was constructed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (GM EMD) in London, Ontario, Canada, entering service in February 2007. As a low-geared Class 66/6 variant specifically modified for heavy freight haulage, it is powered by an EMD 12-710G3B-EC 12-cylinder turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine generating 3,200 brake horsepower (2,385 kW) and a starting tractive effort of 409 kN (92,000 lbf), with a maximum speed capped at 65 mph for maximum haulage torque. Repainted from its original Bardon Aggregates scheme into Genesee & Wyoming's corporate orange and black Freightliner livery with Freightliner branding, 66623 bears the commemorative name Lest We Forget.

The hauled locomotives comprise three General Electric (GE) Class 70 PowerHaul Co-Co diesel-electrics built at Erie, Pennsylvania between 2009 and 2011. Powered by a GE PowerHaul P616LDA1 16-cylinder Miller-cycle diesel engine delivering 3,690 brake horsepower (2,750 kW) and a starting tractive effort of 544 kN (122,000 lbf), these 129-tonne locomotives are designed for heavy bulk haulage. The triple-headed convoy behind 66623 consists of 70017 in standard Freightliner green and yellow livery, 70003 in Freightliner green and yellow livery updated with Heavy Haul Rail branding, and 70016 retaining its original Freightliner green and yellow branding.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen on Tuesday 21/07/2026 at 15:39, Freightliner Class 66 66623 'Lest We Forget' is captured sounding excellent tones as it blasts through Goose Hill foot crossing near Kirkthorpe and powers down the line. Running approximately 16 minutes late, the locomotive is hauling a heavy dead-in-tow locomotive convoy containing 70017, 70003, and 70016, operating a stock positioning movement from Earles Sidings (Hope) Freightliner Heavy Haul to Leeds Balm Road Loco Freightliner Heavy Haul.
