First Ever Diesel Hydraulic Made! Historic 1931 Built 'Neptune' Locomotive Number D565

Constructed by Hudswell, Clarke & Co. of Leeds in May 1931 (Works No. D565), Neptune is a 20-inch (508 mm) gauge 4-6-2 steam-outline tender locomotive built for the grand opening of the Scarborough North Bay Railway. Styled after Sir Nigel Gresley’s iconic LNER A1/A3 Pacific express engines, Neptune holds major railway history as the world's first diesel locomotive fitted with a hydraulic transmission and remains the oldest surviving, operational diesel-hydraulic locomotive on earth. The locomotive sports the number 1931 painted on the cab side (denoting its historic build year) and NBR lettering across the tender. Originally delivered in LNER Apple Green, Neptune was repainted into British Railways BR Brunswick Green in the early 2000s, a striking scheme it continues to carry in regular service.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen on Monday 27/07/2026 at 13:35, Neptune is captured at the northern terminus of Scalby Mills station on the Scarborough North Bay Railway. Operating under bright mid-day summer skies, the historic engine is seen performing essential runaround maneuvers. After uncoupling from its inbound train, Neptune uses the Scalby Mills turntable to reverse heading, running along the loop track to couple back onto the opposite end of the stock in readiness for the return journey back to Peasholm station (Peasholm Park).
