Description
Constructed by Hudswell, Clarke & Co. of Leeds in May 1931 (Works No. D565), Neptune is a 20-inch (508 mm) gauge 4-6-2 steam-outline tender locomotive built for the opening of the Scarborough North Bay Railway. Styled in the outline of Sir Nigel Gresley’s iconic LNER A1/A3 Pacific express engines, Neptune made history as the world's first diesel locomotive fitted with a hydraulic transmission. Originally powered by a two-cylinder 26 horsepower Dorman diesel engine paired with a torque converter drive, the locomotive was later re-engined with a modern Kubota diesel power unit driving a hydraulic pump and motor system. Finished in classic British Railways Brunswick Green livery, Neptune remains in active service as the oldest operating diesel-hydraulic locomotive anywhere on earth.

Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen on a beautiful summer's day on Monday 27/07/2026 at 13:06, Neptune is captured cutting through the peaceful woodland section on its approach to Peasholm station in Peasholm Park (Northstead Manor Gardens). Hauling a pristine rake of traditional green and cream coaches, the miniature express travels through the wooded cutting and passes directly underneath the stone bridge as it nears the station terminus.
