Very Fast EMU Acceleration! ScotRail Coradia Juniper EMU Numbers 334001 & 334005 Powering West
Built by Alstom at Washwood Heath, Birmingham in 1999 (entering passenger service in 2002), 334001 is the first-built member of the 27-year-old Class 334 'Coradia Juniper' electric multiple unit (EMU) fleet. Powered by a 25 kV AC overhead supply via pantograph, the 3-car unit utilizes an Alstom ONIX 800 IGBT traction inverter driving four 270 kW traction motors to produce 1,448 hp (1,080 kW). Capable of a maximum service speed of 90 mph (145 km/h) with maximum acceleration of 0.62 m/s², 334001 operates across ScotRail's electrified North Clyde and Argyle line suburban networks carrying ScotRail's blue Saltire livery.
Trailing Unit: Class 334 No. 334005
Constructed by Alstom at Washwood Heath in 2000 (entering service in 2002), 334005 is a matching 3-car Class 334 Juniper EMU. Equipped with identical 25 kV AC overhead electric traction gear generating 1,448 hp (1,080 kW), 334005 works in multiple with 334001 to form a 6-car set delivering a combined total power output of 2,896 hp (2,160 kW). Capable of a 90 mph (145 km/h) top speed, it operates in push-pull multiple-unit configuration in ScotRail Saltire livery.
Rolling Stock: 6-Car Electric Multiple Unit Formation
The train is formed of a 6-car suburban electric formation consisting of two 3-car Class 334 sets (DMS-PTS-DMS vehicle order). Equipped with automated passenger doors, regenerative braking, and high-torque AC traction motors, these lightweight steel-bodied EMUs deliver rapid acceleration away from station stops across Scotland's central belt.
Seen here in 8K 16:9 widescreen departing from Haymarket station on an express suburban working from Edinburgh Waverley to Helensburgh Central, a 6-car ScotRail Class 334 electric multiple unit formation is captured powering westward. Led by unit 334001 with 334005 trailing, the 2,896 hp pair shoots off down the platform lines with rapid electric acceleration towards the North Clyde Line on a cloudy summer afternoon on Sunday, 2nd of August 2026 at 15:16.
