Constructed by Bombardier Transportation at Derby Litchurch Lane Works in 2004 (as part of the 170425–170434 batch), 170427 is a 22-year-old 3-car Class 170/4 'Turbostar' diesel multiple unit (DMU). Formed of three passenger cars (DMSL-MS-DMCL), each vehicle is equipped with an underfloor MTU 6R 183 TD13H 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 422 hp (315 kW), delivering a total combined output of 1,266 hp (945 kW) driving through Voith hydraulic transmission. Capable of a service top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h), unit 170427 operates across ScotRail's regional and express networks in ScotRail's iconic blue Saltire livery.
