Description
English Electric "Type 4" diesel locomotive D213 "Andania" with 47805 at the rear are seen arriving and departing Wigan North Western on the night of Sunday 25th February 2024.

The Class 40 was working day two of the Whistling Highlander railtour seen heading home from Inverness to Crewe. She stops here to drop off more passengers. Running a few minutes early in mighty form here. The departure was loud and inonic.

Locomotive No. ‘40013’ was called ‘Andania’ although no longer wears her nameplate. A total of 200 Class 40s were built by English Electric between 1958 and 1962 and were numbered D200-D399, but ‘Andania’ is one of just seven in the class to be preserved since being retired. They were for a time the pride of the British Rail early diesel fleet. Despite their initial success, by the time the last examples were entering service they were already being replaced on some top-link duties by more powerful locomotives. As they were slowly relegated from express passenger uses, the class found work on secondary passenger and freight services where they worked for many years, the final locomotives being retired from regular service in 1985. It was, infamously, one of this class that was involved in the 1963 Great Train Robbery. ‘Andania’ is currently based at Crewe. They were built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows which is only a few miles away.
