Prototype Legend vs Modern Power | Class 89 vs Class 93 Passing Springs Branch | 14th July 2026
Representing the past and British Rail we have special prototype electric locomotive class 89 89001 named "Avocat" but fondly nicknamed "Badger working what was her first class 1 headcoded special for around 26 years reportedly seen having a run of "The Chairman's Train" which ran from Carlisle to London Euston. A pair of class 37s hauled the train from Kilmarnock to Carlisle too
Representing the future and the almost brand new Class 93 locomotive tri-mode locomotive built by Stadler Rail for Rail Operations Group (ROG). Capable of running on 25 kV AC overhead electric lines, a 900 kW diesel engine, or lithium titanate oxide (LTO) batteries, it offers versatile, zero-emission last-mile capabilities and reaches a top speed of 110 mph. We see this example working tests for Direct Rail Services on container train from Coatbridge to Daventry.
With the class 88s lease due up soon and having had failures it's a big moment to see what is next to change rail freight haulage.
