4498 Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Members Tour - 21st May 2022

LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 number 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' wearing the wartime black colours is seen heading along the west coast main line and through Bamfurlong twice south of Wigan on the morning and evening of Saturday 21st May 2022.

The stunning A4 class steam locomotive was working her first revenue run since a decade long and 10 million pounds overhaul seen heading from Crewe to Carlisle and back outward via the Settle & Carlisle line and the return back over the west coast main line through Shap. The train was sporting the headboard “Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust” with SNG Locomotive Trust Members onboard. She looked fantastic here and this was my very first shot of her. I'm particularly pleased as the A4s are my personal favourite steam loco class.

On the return leg she was allowed to run early through Carnforth to Preston instead of for her booked water break. The light is often a little challenging on this side of the line with low sun and clouds breaking but still made for a nice shot with the train at speed making her way back home towards Crewe. Spotters were certainly out in force today.
