The Next Generation Arrives 93001 on Test at Springs Branch - 09th June 2025
The Tri mode locomotive was working a light engine test run from Worksop to Glasgow Central routed via Derby, Stoke and Crewe.
Glad to finally catch one as previously unable to get the late night workings a while back. This runs back south the following day.
The official working today 93001
0Q07 0615 Worksop Down Yard to Glasgow Central
Passed 1025
Running 31 late
The loco spent 52 minutes at Stoke On Trent Junction just east of Stoke On Trent faffing about waiting for passenger trains. Not booked do so. Also stopped at Crewe for a staff changeover as booked. Audio ruined by a car dragging a crane across bridge. New land owners appear to be making some sort of horse riding facility.
British Rail Class 93 is a tri-mode locomotive built by Stadler Rail in Valencia. It is an evolution of the Class 88 bi-mode locomotive, which was built by Stadler for Direct Rail Services. Three different power sources are used to power the locomotive – 4,000 kW (5,400 hp) 25 kV AC overhead electric power, or a 900 kW (1,200 hp) diesel engine supplemented by a 400 kW (540 hp) battery – allowing the locomotive to be used on both electrified and non-electrified lines.
Performance figures
Maximum speed 110 mph (180 km/h)
Power output
On AC electric supply 4,600 kW (6,200 hp)
Diesel engine 900 kW (1,200 hp)
Battery packs 400 kW (540 hp)
Tractive effort 290 kN (At low speeds)
Proposed usage
ROG intends to pair the locomotive with a new generation of freight wagons that would run at a maximum speed of 100 mph (160 km/h), comparable to that of contemporary passenger trains. Trains formed of such wagons would be easier to insert into timetables around and between existing passenger trains, increasing flexibility and potentially creating capacity for more freight trains on the national network.
In addition to freight, the Class 93 has also been designed to accommodate the haulage of passenger stock, including a variable-height Dellner coupling and a three-step Westcode brake in addition to its conventional two-pipe air brake.

A Class 93 locomotive, numbered 93001, was observed during a test run along the West Coast Main Line and through Springs Branch south of Wigan on 9 June 2025. The tri-mode locomotive operated a light engine service from Worksop to Glasgow Central via Derby, Stoke, and Crewe. It spent time at Stoke On Trent Junction and Crewe, with a staff changeover recorded at the latter. Audio quality was affected by external factors near Stoke On Trent. The locomotive is part of an evolution of rail technology developed by Stadler Rail.
