87002 On The Electric Scot at Bamfurlong - Wednesday 26th January 2022
The train was working the opening northbound leg of “The Electric Scot” “Intercity” tour from London to Glasgow. Built in the 1970s by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe, the electric locomotives were designed for high-speed express passenger services along the West Coast Main Line which they did a top job for many years. Sadly before my time really. Great to see them on charter work.
We see the train slowly heading through Bamfurlong south of Wigan having slowed as what is now the modern alternative was ontime in the station in front slowing her. The tour had encountered brief problems in the Acton Bridge area. I have since heard it was a faulty tap changer relay that failed and was since replaced/fixed.
Luckily the train began moving and looked mighty fine here running around 46 late here.

A Class 87 electric locomotive, numbered 87002 "Royal Sovereign," is seen operating on the West Coast Main Line near Bamfurlong, south of Wigan. The train, in Intercity "Swallow" livery, was part of a charter service working the northbound leg of “The Electric Scot” tour from London to Glasgow. Accompanied by MkIII coaches and a Driving Van Trailer (82139), the locomotive was involved in a brief disruption earlier in the journey near Acton Bridge. The footage captures the train moving through the area following the incident.
