Constructed from the ground up by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust at Darlington Locomotive Works and completed in 2008, 60163 (Tornado) represents an 18-year-old triumph of modern heritage engineering. Conceived from the historic 1948 design of LNER Chief Mechanical Engineer Arthur Peppercorn, Tornado holds the distinction of being the first mainline express steam locomotive built in Great Britain since 1960. Featuring a 250 psi boiler feeding three 19-inch cylinders driving 6 ft 8 in wheels to produce 37,397 lbf of tractive effort, this 167-ton 4-6-2 Pacific is mainline certified for 75 mph and famously achieved a top speed of 100 mph during high-speed testing in 2017. Resplendent in British Railways (BR) Brunswick Green livery with orange and black lining, Tornado remains a celebrated icon of modern steam preservation.

Promoted by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) as Tornado: The Steam Superstar is Back at the NYMR, this landmark summer event showcases the renowned 21st-century Pacific in active passenger service across the North York Moors National Park. Operating diagrams between Pickering and Grosmont, the locomotive hauls an authentic formation of British Rail Mark 1 heritage coaching stock presented in classic crimson and cream livery, delivering an elegant steam-era experience across 24 miles of preserved Yorkshire countryside.

Captured in 8K 16:9 widescreen during a compilation sequence at Pickering station, newly constructed steam locomotive No. 60163 (Tornado) arrives on its second scheduled working of the day bound for Grosmont. The BR Brunswick Green Pacific glides beneath the historic train shed of Pickering station, a setting whose architectural elegance and glass-roof canopy evoke a timeless, period-accurate nostalgia that transports onlookers back to the golden age of steam travel. Here, the locomotive uncouples to execute a run-around maneuver via the adjacent platform track. Reversing beneath the ornate glass canopy lost in time, Tornado couples to the opposite end of the rake and departs tender-first, producing a resonant exhaust beat and plumes of steam as it powers northbound back toward Grosmont on Thursday, 6th of August 2026 at 23:40.
