One of the Most Luxurious Trains in the World! Belmond Royal Scotsman With Class 66 Number 66746

Locomotive: GBRf Class 66 No. 66746 (Ian Grant)
Built by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) at London, Ontario, Canada in 2003 (originally entering service as 66410), 66746 (Ian Grant) is a 23-year-old Co-Co diesel-electric Class 66 locomotive operated by GB Railfreight (GBRf). Powered by a 3,000 hp (2,240 kW) EMD 12-710T5C 2-stroke V12 turbocharged diesel engine driving General Motors traction motors, it delivers a top operating speed of 75 mph (120 km/h). Dedicated to hauling the luxury Belmond Royal Scotsman since April 2016, 66746 wears a bespoke royal claret/royal purple livery accented with gold waistlining, GBRf branding, and the historic Great Scottish & Western Railway (GS&WR) coat of arms crest.

Operating continuously since its launch in May 1985 (41 years of luxury service), the iconic Belmond Royal Scotsman is run by Belmond Ltd as a five-star Scottish country house hotel on wheels.

The train provides an ultra-exclusive, intimate passenger capacity capped at 36 to 40 guests, served by an attentive on-board crew delivering a high 3:1 passenger-to-staff ratio. Journeys depart Edinburgh Waverley on itineraries ranging from short 2-night tours ("Taste of the Highlands") up to grand 7-night journeys exploring the whole of Great Britain.

The 10-car luxury rake composition features 1 Observation Car positioned at the trailing end with an open-air verandah viewing balcony, brass railings, and the GS&WR coat of arms crest. It includes 2 Fine Dining Cars named Raven and Victory, serving world-class local Scottish haute-cuisine accompanied by fine wines and single malts. Guests stay across 5 State Sleeping Cars housing private en-suite twin cabins, double state rooms, and Grand Suites with mahogany marquetry and tartan upholstery. The train is completed by 1 dedicated Dior Spa Car equipped with treatment rooms for massage and spa therapy on the move, alongside 1 Service & Generator Car housing staff quarters and power supply equipment.

The core rake consists of converted 1960 Metropolitan-Cammell Pullman coaches (66 years old) alongside modified Mark 3 carriages. For example, the signature Observation Car was converted from the 1960 Pullman kitchen car Snipe. The fleet has undergone multi-million-pound custom refurbishments, incorporating handcrafted Bournemouth woodworking, en-suite plumbing installations, and modern luxury upgrades such as the Dior Spa carriage.

Seen in 8K 16:9 widescreen on its journey from Edinburgh Waverley towards the Keith branch platform on a high-luxury Highland circuit, the GBRf Belmond Royal Scotsman railtour passes through Haymarket station in Edinburgh. Hauled by 23-year-old Class 66 No. 66746 (Ian Grant) in its bespoke royal claret livery, the 3,000 hp locomotive powers westwards at speed through the station platform on a sunny summer afternoon with its open-verandah Observation Car trailing on Sunday, 2nd of August 2026 at 15:26.
