Colas Rail Freight Class 56 locomotives 56105 & 56049 are seen slowing down through Wigan North Western on the cold and dark evening of Monday 22nd January 2024. The grids were working the early running Carlisle to Chirk logs. The reason for the early running is that she was diverted from her usual route down the Settle & Carlisle line to using the west coast main line instead. I’d imagine weather conditions being a key reason. Passenger trains were in absolute chaos so she had an easy run south as far as Balshaw Lane to be held there for an Avanti to pass.

The train would cross onto the slow lines just south of me here to allow another Avanti service pass. 56s have become regular on this job which is fun. Not a clue what’s happening to the class 70s
