Class 150 Number 150008: 3-Car Northern Train Completing its Sheffield Service to Leeds

British Rail Class 150 "Sprinter" 3-car diesel-hydraulic multiple unit (DMU) number 150008 was constructed by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at York Carriage Works between 1985 and 1986. Originally built as a standard 2-car Class 150/1 set, this specific unit was later uniquely lengthened by Northern Trains into a high-capacity 3-car hybrid formation by inserting an intermediate center passenger car salvaged from a split Class 150/2 set (combining vehicles from 150111 and 150226). Weighing approximately 110 tonnes, this rugged regional asset is powered by three underfloor-mounted Cummins NT855-R5 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines, generating 286 horsepower per car for a combined total of 858 brake horsepower driven through Voith hydraulic transmissions. Engineered with a durable steel bodyshell based on the Mark 3 carriage design and geared for a maximum operational service speed of 75 mph, this unit features double-leaf pocket sliding doors and is beautifully turned out in the active corporate Northern Trains white, blue, and orange livery.
