Powered by a 2,250 hp (1,680 kW) MTU 16V 4000 R41 16-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine driving a Brush main alternator, the 70-ton power car is capable of a maximum operating top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h). Resplendent in ScotRail's 'Inter7City' dark blue livery featuring iconic Scottish city skyline silhouettes, 43149 provides front-end traction for flagship express passenger routes connecting Scotland's seven cities.
Rear Power Car: ScotRail Class 43 No. 43138
Built by BREL at Crewe Works in 1980, 43138 is a 46-year-old Bo-Bo HST power car operating at the rear of the set to provide push-pull capability and auxiliary electric train supply (ETS). Also fitted with an upgraded 2,250 hp (1,680 kW) MTU 16V 4000 R41 diesel power plant driving Bo-Bo bogies through electric traction motors, 43138 delivers a matching 125 mph (200 km/h) operational top speed. Carrying matching ScotRail Inter7City livery, 43138 works in tandem via multiple-unit control with 43149, forming part of the world's fastest diesel passenger class.
The train conveys a short-form rake of 5 British Rail Mark 3 coaches, specifically modernized by Wabtec for ScotRail's Inter7City network. These heritage carriages have been heavily re-engineered, replacing original manual slam doors with modern power-operated automatic sliding plug doors, alongside controlled emission retention toilets, accessible seating layouts, Wi-Fi, and interior LED lighting. Following widespread HST retirements across England, these ScotRail sets represent some of the very last active High Speed Trains operating scheduled mainline passenger services anywhere in the United Kingdom.
