East Coast Main Line 1979–1980 | Deltics, Peaks, Class 40s, Class 20s & HSTs

Experience the East Coast Main Line during one of the most fascinating periods in British Rail history. Filmed around 1979–1980, this cine archive footage captures the remarkable variety of traction that could still be found as the railway entered a new era.

The legendary Class 55 Deltics were approaching the end of their careers, with the new InterCity 125 (HST) fleet rapidly taking over the premier express services. Despite this, several Deltics are still seen in action on semi-fast trains, including three different locomotives passing Barkston Junction.

The film also features an impressive selection of classic BR diesel power, including Class 45/46 Peaks, Class 40s and Class 20s, making this a wonderful snapshot of the East Coast Main Line during its final years of such varied locomotive operation.
