We Found the Real Engine Behind Thomas #thomasthetankengine #steam #brighton #fyp
Mention the name **Thomas** to almost any railway enthusiast and one little blue tank engine immediately comes to mind. But did you know that Thomas's famous appearance was inspired by a real class of steam locomotive?
In this video, we explore the fascinating story of the **London, Brighton and South Coast Railway E2 Class 0-6-0T** โ the locomotive that provided the inspiration for one of the most famous fictional engines in the world.
Designed by **L. B. Billinton** and built at Brighton Works between **1913 and 1916**, the E2 was developed from the earlier E1 Class. We'll discover why the E2 was created, the problems with its original water tanks, its work on shunting and freight duties, and even an unusual experiment using E2s on passenger trains.
We'll also follow the class through duties at locations including **London Victoria, Dover, Hither Green and Southampton Docks**, before looking at why changing railway technology eventually made these little tank engines redundant.
Sadly, by **April 1963**, the entire E2 Class had been withdrawn and scrapped. Not a single locomotive survived into preservation.
But the E2 gained an extraordinary second life.
Thanks to **Rev. W. Awdry's Railway Series** and illustrator **Reginald Payne**, the basic appearance of the E2 became associated with a little blue engine called **Thomas** โ helping turn an otherwise largely forgotten class of British steam locomotive into one recognised by generations around the world.
So climb aboard as we discover the story of the **REAL engine behind Thomas the Tank Engine!**
