Built by Brush Traction at the Falcon Works in Loughborough in 1964 (originally numbered D1733, later 47141, 47596, and converted to long-range electric train heating Class 47/8 specification as 47813), 47813 is a 62-year-old Co-Co diesel-electric locomotive operated by West Coast Railways (WCR). Fitted with a 2,580 hp (1,925 kW) Sulzer 12LDA28-C 12-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine driving Brush traction motors, the 122-tonne locomotive generates a maximum starting tractive effort of 60,000 lbf (267 kN), a maximum operational top speed of 95 mph (153 km/h), and a large long-range fuel capacity of 5,900 litres (1,300 imperial gallons). Outfitted in West Coast Railways' signature corporate maroon/claret livery with full high-visibility yellow warning front ends, 47813 historically carried the names Bolton Wanderer and John O'Gaunt during its British Rail InterCity career and now serves as essential frontline motive power across the mainline charter network.

Constructed by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in 1965 (originally entering service as D6969 and later numbered 37269 before its modernization), 37669 is a 61-year-old Co-Co heavy mixed-traffic diesel-electric locomotive operated by West Coast Railways (WCR). Powered by a 1,750 hp (1,305 kW) English Electric 12CSVT 12-cylinder turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine driving English Electric traction motors, the 102-tonne locomotive produces a maximum starting tractive effort of 55,000 lbf (245 kN) and a top operational speed of 80 mph (129 km/h). It is equipped with an onboard fuel capacity of 3,910 litres (860 imperial gallons). Locomotive 37669 is presented in West Coast Railways maroon livery with a clean white/cream waistline stripe and full yellow warning front ends. The locomotive operates un-named within the WCR mainline pool, popular among rail enthusiasts for its distinctive and classic English Electric exhaust roar.

The train conveys a classic West Coast Railways charter rake comprised of British Rail Mark 2 passenger carriages presented in a distinctive split formation of retro InterCity Blue & Grey and WCR Maroon liveries, marshalled alongside a dedicated British Rail Mark 1 kitchen/buffet catering car in WCR maroon. Operating as an empty coaching stock (ECS) shunting move following the arrival of The Scarborough Spa Express from Carnforth, this rake is being transferred from the terminus platforms to Scarborough excursion sidings to stable securely for the afternoon before working the return evening charter service back across Yorkshire.
