Wolverhampton to Walsall in the 1980s – Full Class 304 EMU Cab Ride Through the Black Country
Step back into the British Rail era for a fascinating driver's-eye journey aboard a classic **British Rail Class 304 EMU**, travelling from **Wolverhampton to Walsall** through the industrial heart of the Black Country.
Filmed in the **late 1980s**, this rare cab ride captures a railway landscape that has changed considerably over the decades.
The Class 304 – originally designated **AM4** – was one of Britain's pioneering 25kV AC electric multiple units. Introduced from 1960, these hardworking trains became a familiar sight around the electrified West Coast Main Line and the Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Crewe areas.
Our journey follows the fascinating railway between Wolverhampton and Walsall, passing through the historic industrial districts around **Willenhall, Darlaston and Pleck**.
Much of this railway has roots stretching back to the **Grand Junction Railway of 1837**, making it part of one of Britain's earliest great trunk railway routes.
Local passenger services disappeared in 1965 and were eventually restored between Wolverhampton and Walsall in 1998, only to be withdrawn again in 2008.
But the story doesn't end there.
In an extraordinary reversal of railway history, passenger trains returned to **Willenhall and Darlaston on 19 March 2026**, more than 60 years after their former stations closed.
Today the railway continues to play an important role for passenger trains, freight traffic and diversionary services.
Sadly, the Class 304 itself wasn't so fortunate.
All 45 units were eventually withdrawn and scrapped, meaning **no complete Class 304 survives in preservation today**.
That makes archive cab rides like this particularly special – allowing us to climb back into the driver's cab and experience a vanished generation of Britain's electric railway.
So sit back and enjoy this remarkable journey through the Black Country aboard one of British Rail's classic first-generation electric multiple units.
