Description
๐Ÿš‚ **BRITISH RAIL ON THE WEST COAST MAIN LINE IN THE 1980s!** ๐Ÿš‚

Travel back more than 40 years to experience the **West Coast Main Line during the unforgettable days of British Rail**.

In this fascinating archive railway journey, we visit **London Euston, Milton Keynes, Preston and Carlisle**, discovering a railway that looked, sounded โ€” and even smelled โ€” very different from the WCML we know today.

The 1980s railway could be **noisy, dark, gloomy and rather grubby**. Stations often looked tired, slam doors echoed across the platforms and diesel exhaust could hang in the air. But for railway enthusiasts, the sheer variety of locomotives and trains made it an incredible period.

Featured in this video are **Classes 08, 26, 33, 37, 40, 56, 81, 82, 83, 85, 86 and 87**, together with various multiple units.

โญ See the mighty **Class 87s** on the great West Coast expresses.

โญ Remember the incredibly versatile **Class 86s**, once a familiar sight on passenger, parcels and freight workings.

โญ Experience veteran **Classes 81, 82, 83 and 85** from the pioneering generations of AC electric traction.

โญ Hear classic British diesels including the **Class 37 and Class 40**.

โญ Discover the humble **Class 08 shunters** that kept stations, depots and yards moving.

The Class 87 was particularly associated with the WCML, its 110 mph capability making it ideally suited to Britain's premier electric expresses. During the 1980s the Class 86 fleet was also enormously important, while sectorisation later divided many of the 86s between InterCity passenger and freight/parcels duties.

By the end of the decade, however, the railway was changing. New Class 90s were appearing, Driving Van Trailers brought push-pull operation to West Coast InterCity services from 1988, and many of British Rail's oldest electric locomotives were nearing the end.

But was something being lost?

Today the West Coast Main Line is cleaner, faster and technologically far more advanced โ€” but does it have the same character?

**Do you miss British Rail in the 1980s?**

Would you go back to the days of locomotive-hauled expresses, parcels trains, railway buffets, slam doors, Rail Blue locomotives and smoky diesel stations?

And perhaps the biggest question of all...

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง **SHOULD WE GO BACK TO BRITISH RAIL?**

Tell us what you think in the comments โ€” this one should certainly create an interesting discussion!
