Step back in time to Rugby Railway Station in the 1990s – when one of Britain's most important railway junctions looked very different from the modern station we know today.

By the 1990s, Rugby was showing its age. The magnificent Victorian trainshed had deteriorated, much of the glazing above the tracks had been removed, and the huge old station could often feel exposed, gloomy and neglected.

Yet this was still the West Coast Main Line – and some of Britain's most famous trains passed through here every day.

In this video we explore Rugby's fascinating railway history, from the arrival of the London & Birmingham Railway in 1838 and the opening of the great 1885 station, through the British Rail era and into the 1990s, when InterCity expresses thundered through on their way between London, Birmingham, the North West and Scotland.

We'll also discover what happened to the enormous Victorian trainshed, why Rugby became such an important railway junction, and how the massive West Coast Main Line modernisation of the 2000s transformed the station.

The redevelopment brought new platforms, a new entrance and ticket office, improved passenger facilities and a completely remodelled track layout – allowing non-stop trains to pass through Rugby at up to 125mph.

Today's Rugby is brighter, faster and considerably more modern.

But did modernisation take away some of the atmosphere and character of the old station?
