Northern Trains Class 156 Action Passes Deep Pit Bridge Hindley | 08th September 2026
British Rail Class 156 Super Sprinter is a type of diesel-hydraulic multiple unit passenger train. A total of 114 sets were built between 1987 and 1989 for British Rail by Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath works. They were built to replace elderly first-generation diesel multiple units (DMUs) and locomotive-hauled passenger trains.
The class 156 is very much one of the trains that began my interest of trains and later spotting so I do always love riding and filming them.
These trains are powered by a Cummins NT855-R5 Configuration 4-litre, inline 6-cylinder, horizontal (flat) turbo-diesel Power Output 285 hp (213 kW) per engine (570 hp total per 2-car train). Top speed being 75 mph (121 km/h. A phenomenal workhorse of a commuter train..
