Knottingley Railway Station in the 1980s – Classic BR Diesels & the Mighty Yorkshire Coal Trains

Step back in time to KNOTTINGLEY IN THE 1980s, when British Rail diesels ruled the rails and this corner of West Yorkshire was at the heart of Britain's enormous coal railway.

In this fascinating archive film, we return to Knottingley during the days when the surrounding railway was alive with diesel locomotives, local passenger trains and seemingly endless Merry-Go-Round coal workings.

Knottingley was perfectly positioned amongst some of Britain's great coal-fired power stations. Ferrybridge, Eggborough and Drax consumed enormous quantities of coal, much of it transported by rail from the Yorkshire coalfields.

The result was an incredible procession of heavy freight trains through the area.

Watch and listen as classic British Rail diesel traction takes us back to an era of growling engines, rattling wagons, semaphore and colour-light signals, coal dust, oil, exhaust fumes and a railway that felt completely different from the one we know today.

It wasn't always glamorous.

Stations could be neglected, trains could be dirty, platforms could feel dark and gloomy, and diesel fumes seemed to hang permanently in the air.

But there was something magical about it too.

The variety of locomotives, the sheer amount of freight and the industrial landscape surrounding the railway made places like Knottingley paradise for railway enthusiasts.

Today, the great coal trains have largely disappeared, Ferrybridge and Eggborough power stations have closed, and the railway landscape has changed almost beyond recognition.

So was British Rail really better?

Or are we simply looking back through rose-tinted spectacles?
