Birmingham New Street Before the Transformation – Classic Trains of the Early 2000s
Step back to the **early 2000s** and experience the trains and atmosphere of **Birmingham New Street railway station** before its huge modern transformation.
At the time, New Street was one of Britain’s busiest and most important railway junctions, but it was a very different place from the bright station passengers know today. Much of the railway was hidden beneath the concrete structures of the 1960s redevelopment, giving the platforms their famously dark and enclosed atmosphere.
In this video we turn the clock back more than 20 years to watch the incredible variety of trains passing through Birmingham New Street. This was an interesting transitional period on Britain’s railways, with the privatised railway still relatively young and a fascinating mixture of older British Rail-era rolling stock alongside newer trains beginning to appear.
From long-distance express services to CrossCountry trains and busy local and regional workings, New Street offered almost constant railway action. Liveries were changing, familiar classes were disappearing, and a new generation of trains was beginning to take over.
For railway enthusiasts, the early 2000s can already feel surprisingly nostalgic. The trains, liveries, station announcements and atmosphere have changed enormously since these scenes were recorded.
