Durham Station in the 1990s – British Rail InterCity 125s & 225s on the East Coast Main Line
Take a nostalgic journey back to Durham Railway Station in the 1990s, when British Rail's InterCity trains thundered along the East Coast Main Line beneath one of Britain's most spectacular railway backdrops.
In this video we return to the final years of British Rail, when the legendary InterCity 1 2 5 was sharing the railway with the new InterCity 2 2 5. The recently introduced Class 91 electric locomotives and Mark 4 coaches represented the future, while the mighty InterCity 1 2 5 remained essential for services continuing beyond the electrified railway at Edinburgh towards Aberdeen and Inverness.
We'll explore the history of Durham station, its magnificent position overlooking this historic cathedral city, the passenger services of the 1990s and the fascinating mixture of rolling stock that could be seen passing through.
Unlike many British stations, Durham largely escaped the darkest and gloomiest years of the railway and retained much of its historic character. But how different is Durham today, and would a passenger from the British Rail era still recognise it?
Join us for another journey into Britain's railway past and experience Durham during a fascinating period of transition.
