Description
Slough Railway Station in the 1980s | When British Rail Ruled the Great Western Main Line.

Step back in time to Slough railway station in the 1980s, when British Rail ruled the rails and the Great Western Main Line looked and sounded very different from the railway we know today.

In this fascinating collection of archive footage, we revisit the trains passing through Slough during the British Rail era — a time of classic diesel traction, slam-door coaching stock, distinctive BR liveries and the unmistakable sights and sounds of the railway in the 1980s.

Slough has long occupied an important position on the Great Western Main Line between London Paddington and Reading, with a mixture of local passenger trains and fast services passing through on their way towards Reading, Oxford, Bristol, South Wales and the West of England.

The railway of the 1980s could be noisy, smoky, grubby and sometimes rather neglected, but it had enormous character. Stations were less polished, trains were often considerably noisier, and there was a wonderful variety of rolling stock that has now largely disappeared from Britain's main lines.

For railway enthusiasts, the 1980s were also a fascinating period of transition. Traditional British Rail was still very much alive, but changes were already taking place that would eventually transform the Great Western Main Line beyond recognition.

Compare these scenes with Slough today and the difference is remarkable. The modern station now sees electric trains and Elizabeth line services, while much of the railway infrastructure familiar to passengers in the 1980s has changed dramatically.

So sit back, turn up the sound and enjoy another journey into Britain's railway past as we remember the trains of Slough in the 1980s.
