Swanage Steam Machines! 60163 'Tornado' at the Swanage Gala + Waverley Paddle Steamer visits Swanage

The final day of this years Swanage Autumn Steam Gala. The event was a Southern themed affair with an Eastern Region headliner in action alongside the home fleet. A1 60163 'Tornado' certainly drew crowds along the line today working trains as the guest locomotive with home fleet participants LSWR T3 563, Southern Railway Bulleid Pacifics 34070 ‘Manston’ and 34072 ‘257 Squadron’ and SR ‘U boat’ 31806. The railway was able to offer trips beyond Norden past Furzebrook Sidings towards the mainline limit at River Frome, with an intensive timetable of passenger, freight, double headers and top and tailed formations in operation throughout the day.

There was another bonus steam powered machine in the area, although this one didn’t operate on rails…

As part of her South Coast excursions, the world’s last seagoing Paddle Steamer, the beautiful P.S Waverley made a short stop this afternoon at Swanage Pier disembarking and picking up passengers between a cruise around Southampton, the Jurassic Coast and Weymouth. Passengers had the option of a cruise, coach transfer and steam hauled service along the Swanage Railway, and the 1946 built steam, this year celebrating 80 years of seafaring glory, certainly drew a crowd during the short time she was moored! | 13.09.2026
