Wareham Station in the 1980s – Amazing British Rail Trains from a Bygone Era.

Step back in time to Wareham Station in the 1980s, when British Rail was still very much part of everyday life and the railway had a completely different atmosphere to the one we know today.

In this nostalgic footage, we spend some time trainspotting at Wareham, on the busy railway line through Dorset towards Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth. It was a fascinating period on the railway, with a wonderful mixture of British Rail traction and rolling stock passing through the station.

The 1980s were a particularly interesting time to be a railway enthusiast. Traditional locomotive-hauled trains could still be seen alongside increasingly common multiple units, while the familiar colours and liveries of British Rail gave the railway an unmistakable character.

Wareham itself is also an interesting station because of its connection with the former branch towards Swanage. Although regular passenger trains to Swanage had disappeared by the 1980s, the story of that railway was far from over, and today the preserved Swanage Railway has become one of Britain's best-known heritage railways.
