Crewe was one of the finest places in Britain for railway enthusiasts. The West Coast Main Line brought powerful electric locomotives including Classes 81, 85, 86 and 87, while diesel traction added even more variety, with Classes 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, 45 and 47 among the many types associated with the area.

From InterCity expresses heading between London, the North West and Scotland to trains for Chester, North Wales and Shrewsbury, Crewe was a place where railway lines seemed to head in almost every direction.

We also look back at the enormous 1985 Crewe remodelling, which transformed the railway layout around the station, and ask how much of the Crewe we knew during the British Rail years can still be recognised today.
