Trainspotting at Atherstone Station in the 1980s | British Rail on the West Coast Main Line
Step back to the 1980s and enjoy some classic British Rail action at Atherstone railway station in Warwickshire.
Sitting on the busy West Coast Main Line between Nuneaton and Tamworth, Atherstone was a brilliant place to watch the trains go by. Although many of the fastest services didn't stop here, that was all part of the excitement for the trainspotter standing on the platform with a notebook and camera.
In this nostalgic look back, we remember the days of Classes 81, 85, 86 and 87, InterCity passenger trains, Mark 2 and Mark 3 coaches, British Rail blue and grey, and the growing appearance of the famous InterCity colours.
There was plenty of freight too, bringing even more variety to a day beside the railway.
With no smartphone apps telling you what was coming next, you simply waited, listened and watched. Then suddenly another train would come thundering through Atherstone!
Do you remember trainspotting at Atherstone or elsewhere on the West Coast Main Line during the 1980s? What locomotives do you remember seeing?
