Trains of Preston Station in the 1980s | British Rail on the West Coast Main Line
Take a journey back to **Preston Railway Station in the 1980s**, when British Rail ruled the rails and this historic Lancashire station was alive with an incredible variety of trains.
Situated on the **West Coast Main Line**, Preston was one of the most important railway junctions in North West England. During the 1980s, passengers could watch powerful electric locomotives arriving with InterCity expresses, while diesels headed away towards places including Blackpool, Barrow-in-Furness and other parts of Lancashire and Cumbria.
Expect plenty of classic British Rail action, with locomotives from Classes 25, 31, 37, 40, 47, 85, 86 and 87 among the types that could be encountered around Preston during the decade, alongside first-generation diesel multiple units and the familiar coaching stock of the period.
The railway of the 1980s was very different from today. Preston could be noisy, grimy and atmospheric, filled with the sounds of locomotive engines, station announcements, slamming doors and the unmistakable smell of the railway. It wasn't always clean or comfortable, but for many railway enthusiasts that was part of its character.
Join us as we travel back to the days of **British Rail at Preston**, when locomotive-hauled passenger trains were an everyday sight and railway variety seemed almost endless.
