Trains at Cambridge South, WAML & Fen Line, 11/08/26

Cambridge South railway station is a railway station in the south of the city of Cambridge, England. It serves the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (which includes Addenbrooke's Hospital and AstraZeneca's headquarters) and the adjacent suburb of Trumpington.

The station is located on the Cambridge line and the West Anglia Main Line, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) south of Cambridge railway station. It is one of three stations in Cambridge alongside the main station and Cambridge North, the latter of which opened in 2017.

The station was first proposed in 2017, and construction works started in 2023.

It opened on 28 June 2026, and is the first station to carry the Great British Railways (GBR) branding.

The station is managed by Greater Anglia and is also served by CrossCountry, Great Northern and Thameslink trains.

All passenger trains call at the station.

In December 2022, the station was given a Transport and Works Act Order approval, which authorised construction of the station and track laying.

The station is built to be fully accessible by people with disabilities and has 1,000 cycle spaces.

Construction work on the station then started in January 2023.

The funding for the £250 million project was fully agreed by the government in June the same year.

The station was originally scheduled to open in December 2025, but this was delayed to early and then June 2026 in February and November 2025, first due to an upgrade to signalling across Cambridge and due to timetable changes on the East Coast Main Line, and then due to one of the subcontractors involved in the internal fit-out of electrical and mechanical systems of the station going into administration.

As part of the Cambridge South station works, South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA) made several improvements on the West Anglia Main Line (WAML) between Cambridge station and Shepreth.

This includes the remodelling of Shepreth Branch Junction (where the WAML and Cambridge lines diverge) in order to allow trains to navigate the junction faster, and almost 10 km (6.2 miles) of new overhead line equipment. These improvements were finished in May 2025.

And followed by a renewal of the signalling system during the 2025 Christmas holiday season.

I’ve never visited Cambridge South before but it was a great station to come visit plus it’s a new station that’s opened recently which was nice opportunity of having plus managed to seeing freight making an appearance which was unexpected but it was better than nothing.

My next station will be Ely which is situated on the Fen Line it’s been at least a year or so since I last did any train spotting there but I always manage to seeing freight making an appearance each time I’m there so until then thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next video.
