Weymouth Railway Station in the 1980s – Class 33s TC Sets, British Rail & the Famous Harbour Tramway
Take a nostalgic journey back to Weymouth Railway Station in the 1980s, when British Rail, diesel locomotives, slam-door trains and seaside holiday traffic created an atmosphere very different from the railway we know today.
In this video, we look back at the fascinating trains and services that could be seen at Weymouth during this remarkable decade. Class 33 diesel locomotives and TC coaching sets were once a familiar sight on services from Bournemouth, before electrification reached Weymouth in 1988 and the impressive Class 442 Wessex Electrics arrived.
We also remember one of Britain's most extraordinary railway operations — the famous Weymouth Harbour Tramway. Trains once left the main station and travelled slowly through the streets towards Weymouth Quay, sharing the road with cars, pedestrians and everyday town traffic. I have also made a separate video dedicated to this fascinating piece of railway history.
We'll discover how Weymouth station changed during the 1980s, what happened when electrification arrived, and how different the railway feels today compared with the noisy, smoky and wonderfully atmospheric days of British Rail.
Do you remember Weymouth in the 1980s? Did you travel behind a Class 33, ride aboard a TC set, see trains travelling through the streets, or experience the arrival of the Class 442s?
