Trains at Exeter St Davids in the 1990s – Remembering British Rail in Devon
Take a journey back to Exeter St Davids railway station in the 1990s, when British Rail was still with us and this wonderful Devon station offered an incredible variety of trains.
In this video we return to the days of InterCity 125s thundering towards Plymouth and Cornwall, Class 47s on passenger workings, the final years of the magnificent Class 50s, and the arrival of the Class 159s on London Waterloo services.
Exeter St Davids has always been a fascinating railway crossroads. Trains from London Paddington, Bristol and the Midlands met services for Plymouth, Penzance, Paignton, Barnstaple and London Waterloo, making it a superb place for anyone interested in Britain's railways.
We also discover why the station is called Exeter St Davids rather than simply Exeter, explore some of its fascinating history, and compare the station of the 1990s with the Exeter St Davids we know today.
Unlike some British stations of the period, Exeter St Davids seemed to escape much of the dark and gloomy atmosphere associated with the railway of the 1980s. Its historic buildings and unusual setting gave it a character all of its own.
Do you remember Exeter St Davids during the 1990s? Did you see the Class 50s, Class 47s or InterCity 125s here? And do you miss the days of British Rail?
