'Tornado' goes South! | Swanage Railway - Autumn Steam Gala 2026 - 11-13/09/26

Over a century of express steam showcased on the Isle of Purbeck, as the Swanage Railway welcomes new build Peppercorn A1 60163 'Tornado' as the star attraction for the 2026 Autumn Steam Gala. Completed in 2008, 60163 represents 21st century steam, being the newest mainline express locomotive in the country. Running alongside the Eastern Pacific throughout the event was LSWR T3 No. 563, built in 1893, which returned to steam in October 2023, and is the UK's oldest operational Express Passenger steam locomotive.

The Victorian and modern duo were joined by other members of the Swanage Railway's homefleet, with Bulleid Battle of Britain Class pairing 34070 'Manston' and 34072 '257 Squadron', in addition to Maunsell U Class 31806. The event would see an intensive timetable, featuring goods services, late evening running, and trains running the full length of the line beyond Norden to the River Frome.
