Description
Highlights from the first day of this year’s Severn Valley Railway Autumn Steam Gala with a varied line up of guest and home fleet locomotives in action.

There were some late locomotive changes to the visiting engines line up, with LMS Ivatt 41313 and Dean Forest Pannier Tank 9681 appearing as advertised, but BR Standard Tank 80097 and GWR Small Prairie 5526 were pulled due to unforeseen circumstances, instead leading to GWR 3850 being confirmed alongside West Coast Railway Company LMS Royal Scot 46115 ‘Scots Guardsman’, returning after visiting last year during the #Railway200 gala https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7evTngqAm0&t=2815s

Interestingly this was the Scots first outing this year. After starring at the Severn Valley last year, she attended at The Greatest Gathering at Derby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnIxFeRT6Mw&list=PLgYOCspNPKLiY3ZiJJaLUHjQwhu7fDEDj returning in a quadruple header to Carnforth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-0k2jWlLHg&list=PLgYOCspNPKLiY3ZiJJaLUHjQwhu7fDEDj&index=8 where she has since received a retube, but owing to the ongoing CDL issues with WCRC Mk1s, and not being air braked, like many WCRC locomotives the Scot hasn’t seen any proper mainline work for a couple of years now, and arrived yesterday with 47804 (stabled at Kidderminster) so it was nice seeing her in action today.

This was slightly ironic in comparison to SVR home fleet LMS Stanier Mogul 13268, which is nearing an eagerly anticipated return to the mainline for the first time in many years Wirth Vintage Trains when it will head the Worcester Shakespeare Express on Sunday 8 November, and it looked and sounded great in action along the line today.

LMS Ivatt 41312 from the Isle of Wight will now begin a tour of heritage railways culminating at the East Somerset Railway where it will be overhauled, and after initially failing this morning and being replaced by BR 75069, it was nice to see her repaired and out in action this afternoon. GWR Large Prairie 4150, the 154th locomotive to be steamed after leaving Barry Scrapyard in 1973 appeared fresh from overhaul, achieving a preservation milestone making its solo Gala debut on its first passenger services for over 60 years, there were a few teething troubles with her departing Bridgnorth this afternoon but the crews did well to keep everything on track so enjoy all the action from Day 1 with a comprehensive working timetable, freights, auto trains and more in operation! | 17.09.2026
