Full Throttle Steam Blast! LMS Class 5MT No. 44806 Climbing The 1 in 49 Grade into Goathland Station
Constructed by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) at Derby Works in July 1944 (works number 154, originally entering traffic as LMS No. 4806 and renumbered 44806 under British Railways in 1948), 44806 is an 82-year-old 4-6-0 mixed-traffic steam locomotive designed by Sir William Stanier. Powered by a coal-fired boiler operating at a working pressure of 225 psi (1.55 MPa) supplying two outside cylinders measuring 18½ in × 28 in (470 mm × 711 mm) actuated by Walschaerts valve gear, the locomotive produces a maximum nominal tractive effort of 25,455 lbf (113.2 kN) (equivalent to approximately 1,500 indicated horsepower). With a total operational weight of 126 tonnes (124 imperial tons) in working order—including its 4,000 imperial gallon tender holding 9 long tons of coal—and a mainline operational top speed of 80 mph (129 km/h), this legendary "Black Five" was built as one of Britain's most successful mixed-traffic designs. The locomotive is immaculately turned out in authentic British Railways lined black livery with red and cream lining and the late BR crest on the tender.
6-Car British Railways Mark 1 Coaching Rake
Coupled behind Class 5MT No. 44806 is a splendid six-coach passenger rake of preserved British Railways Mark 1 corridor stock finished in classic regional liveries carrying traditional Eastern Region 'E' prefixes. The rake is marshalled starting with Tourist Standard Open (TSO) No. E42386 (frequently recorded in service as E4286, constructed at Crewe Works in 1956). Following directly behind are three additional open standards: E4252, a 1956-built TSO constructed at BR York Carriage & Wagon Works; E4839, a 1959-built TSO constructed by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company; and E4597, built at York in 1956. Bringing up the rear portion of the passenger consist is Brake Open Second (BSO) No. E9274, constructed at Doncaster Works in 1955 to provide guard accommodation and luggage stowage, with the train completed by E3801, a 1953 York-built Tourist Standard Open. Together, these six steel-bodied carriages represent the golden age of 1950s British Railways travel.
Powering Up the Incline into Goathland Station
Seen in 8K 16:9 widescreen working hard on a southbound passenger service from Grosmont to Pickering, LMS Stanier Class 5MT No. 44806 tackles the steep, punishing gradients of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) on the climb up to Goathland station. Battling the formidable 1 in 49 incline out of the Murk Esk valley, the 82-year-old Stanier 4-6-0 lays down every ounce of tractive effort, creating plenty of deafening steam thrash and sending towering plumes of exhaust into the sky as the locomotive digs deep into the rails. The unmistakable sharp beat of the two outside cylinders echoes across the heather moorland as the heavy train powers into the platform on a glorious late-summer afternoon on Saturday, 12th of September 2026 at 14:56.
