Description
Brighton Station in the 1980s – Remembering the Trains and Sounds of British Rail.

Step back in time to **Brighton Railway Station in the 1980s**, when British Rail ruled the rails and the station was filled with the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a very different railway.

In this video, we take a nostalgic look at the trains and railway scene at one of the South Coast’s most famous stations. Brighton was an incredibly busy terminus, with frequent services towards London Victoria and London Bridge, alongside trains connecting the city with destinations across Sussex and the South Coast.

For railway enthusiasts, the 1980s were a fascinating period. The familiar Southern Region electric multiple units were everywhere, including slam-door stock that would remain part of everyday railway life for many years. You could also encounter parcels traffic, engineering movements and other workings that added variety to an already busy station.

And then there was Brighton station itself — a magnificent Victorian terminus beneath its great curved roof. The station we know today is still instantly recognisable, but the atmosphere of the 1980s was very different: British Rail signs, slam doors, old-fashioned destination boards, railway staff on the platforms and trains carrying the liveries of the period.

For anyone who remembers Brighton during the British Rail years, this should bring back plenty of memories.

What do you remember about Brighton Railway Station in the 1980s? Did you travel through here, commute to London, or spend a day trainspotting on the platforms? And which trains do you remember most?
