Class 03 No. 03179 in Network SouthEast Livery at The Bluebell Railways 40th Anniversary Diesel Gala
Constructed by British Railways at Swindon Works in 1962 (originally entering service as D2179 and renumbered under TOPS as 03179 in 1974), 03179 is a 64-year-old 0-6-0DM diesel-mechanical shunting locomotive. Powered by an 8-cylinder, 4-stroke Gardner 8L3 diesel engine producing 204 hp (152 kW) at 1,200 rpm, power is transmitted through a Wilson-Drewry CA5 R7 five-speed epicyclic gearbox and RF11 spiral bevel reverse/final-drive unit, turning a frame-mounted jackshaft that drives the 3 ft 7 in driving wheels via side coupling rods. The 30.7-tonne locomotive features a maximum tractive effort of 15,300 lbf (68 kN) and a top operating speed of 28.5 mph (46 km/h). Rebuilt with a distinctive cut-down cab profile (11 ft 10 in) to clear the low-profile tunnel at Ryde for engineering work on the Isle of Wight in 1987, the locomotive gained national fame when it was painted into British Rail's vibrant red, white, and blue Network SouthEast (NSE) livery. Named Clive during its later depot pilot career, 03179 is immaculately turned out in gleaming NSE paintwork with polished coupling rods and gleaming brass fittings.
Rolling Stock: LNWR Observation Car No. 1503 & SR 'Queen Mary' Brake Van No. 56290
Coupled directly behind the locomotive is Observation Coach No. 1503, an exquisite London and North Western Railway (LNWR) vehicle constructed at Wolverton Works in 1913. Originally built for panoramic sightseeing services along the scenic North Wales branch between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1503 features expansive glazed observation windows, 72 reversible tram-type seats, and intricately lined period livery. Bringing up the rear of the shuttle is 25-ton bogie goods brake van No. 56290, built to Diagram 1550 by the Southern Railway at Ashford Works (Kent) in July 1936 with an underframe manufactured at Lancing Works (Sussex). Nicknamed the "Queen Mary" by railwaymen due to its large size and smooth riding characteristics on passenger-type bogies designed for express freight traffic, 56290 is immaculately turned out in authentic Southern Railway livery.
Horsted Keynes Observation Shuttle: Shunting to the North Signal
Seen during the Bluebell Railway's Network SouthEast 40th Anniversary Diesel Gala, Class 03 No. 03179 operates special passenger observation shuttle trips from Horsted Keynes station on a beautiful, warm summer's afternoon on Sunday, 6th of September 2026 at 15:38. This intimate close-up perspective captures the immaculate 64-year-old shunter in full mechanical rhythm as its external jackshaft, flycrank, and connecting side rods churn smoothly under power. Emitting the unmistakable low-revving purr and rhythmic chug of its Gardner 8L3 engine, 03179 propels observation car 1503 and Queen Mary brake van 56290 northwards out of the platforms towards the shunt signal before reversing gracefully back into the station grounds to alight its passengers.
